Free Bets UK: How the Stake Rule Changes the Arithmetic
A free bet is not free money and it is not a bet in the ordinary sense. It is a promotional credit with a specific settlement rule, and that rule, whether your stake comes back, is the single fact that decides how it should be handled.
Stake returned against stake not returned
Most free bets are stake-not-returned. Place a £25 free bet at 4.0 and a win pays £75, not £100: the winnings above the stake, without the stake itself, because the stake was never your money.
A small number of promotions are stake-returned, which behave like an ordinary bet placed with somebody else's money and are worth considerably more per pound of face value.
The practical consequence is arithmetic. Covering a stake-not-returned free bet on an exchange requires a smaller lay stake, because there is less to cover. Use the figure for an ordinary bet and you overlay, the two outcomes stop matching, and you hand back part of the value. The calculator has a mode for each.
What the terms actually restrict
A minimum price is the most common condition. A free bet that must be placed at odds of at least a stated figure removes the option of using it on a short-priced selection, which is what changes the variance of the whole exercise.
Expiry is the second, and it is usually short, days rather than weeks. An unused free bet is worth nothing, so the expiry date matters more than the face value.
Then market restrictions: excluded sports, excluded bet types, in-play exclusions, and sometimes a requirement that the qualifying bet settles before the free bet is issued. Each of those is a term rather than a guideline and each is enforced at settlement.
Where a free bet is not what it appears
Bonus funds are the confusion worth clearing up. A free bet is placed as a bet. Bonus credit typically carries a wagering requirement, meaning it must be staked a stated number of times before anything can be withdrawn, and the multiple is what determines whether it is worth anything at all.
A high wagering multiple on a modest bonus is usually worth less than the time it takes to work through, and the arithmetic is easy to get wrong in the operator's favour. Work out the multiple before depositing rather than after.
Odds boosts are a third thing again: a named selection offered above the bookmaker's own price, usually capped at a small stake. The value there is the gap between the boosted price and the exchange price, and nothing else.
The six shapes a promotion takes
The six shapes a UK sign-up or reload offer takes, and how each one is handled
| Offer shape | How it works | Qualifying bet | Free bet stake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bet and getTwo steps. Lay the qualifying bet to hold the loss down, then lay the free bet separately. | Place a qualifying bet of a stated size at a stated minimum price. A free bet arrives once it settles, win or lose. | Yes, at your own risk | Not returned |
| Matched first betOne step if the refund is cash. If it is a free bet, the free-bet leg is a second calculation. | Your first bet is refunded as a free bet, or occasionally as cash, if it loses. | Yes, refunded on a loss | Not returned |
| Deposit matchOnly worth it when the wagering multiple is low. Work the multiple out before depositing. | The bookmaker adds a percentage of your deposit as bonus funds, usually behind a wagering requirement. | No, but wagering applies | Depends on the wagering terms |
| “Risk-free” bet (the bookmaker’s term)The simplest shape there is. One lay covers it and the maths is a single calculation. | A losing first bet is returned in cash rather than as a free bet. | Yes, refunded in cash on a loss | Returned |
| Acca insuranceLaying every leg individually is fiddly and the edge is thin. Skip it while you are learning. | A multiple bet on a stated number of selections is refunded when exactly one leg lets it down. | Yes | Varies by promotion |
| Odds boostLay at the exchange price. The value is the gap between the boosted price and the lay price. | A named selection is offered at a price above the bookmaker’s own, usually capped at a small stake. | No | Returned |
18+ only. New customer terms, minimum prices and expiry windows are set by the bookmaker and change without notice. Free help is available at gambleaware.org, and gamstop.co.uk blocks every UK-licensed account at once.
Current terms belong on the operator's own page, where they are kept up to date and where the full conditions sit. No live offer amounts are published here, because a static page cannot keep them true and a stale promotional term is worse than none.
The licensed operators
Every brand below holds a remote betting licence from the Gambling Commission, and the row shows which entity actually holds it. Two brands can be one operator, which matters because promotions, limits and restrictions attach to the operator rather than to the name over the door.

| Every operator link in this table is commercial: The Money Pig is paid a commission if you open an account through one, at no cost to you. It does not decide the order of the rows or the wording of anything in them. | |||
Ladbrokes and Coral appear against the same licence number because they are the same licensed operator. Assume a restriction on one applies to the other.
What this is not
It is not risk-free. Covering both outcomes on an exchange narrows the variance and does not remove it: a market can move between the two bets, a term can bind in a way you did not read, and accounts get restricted once the pattern is visible.
Anyone describing free bets as guaranteed profit is either selling something or has not done enough of it. The honest description is a small, calculable edge with execution risk attached.
And it is betting with real money at a licensed bookmaker, which means the usual protections and the usual cautions apply. See how the whole approach works and the calculation.
Frequently asked questions
Does a free bet return my stake if it wins?
Usually not. Most are stake-not-returned, so a £25 free bet at 4.0 pays £75 rather than £100. A minority are stake-returned and are worth considerably more per pound of face value.
Why does the lay stake differ for a free bet?
Because there is less to cover: only the winnings above the stake, since the stake was never yours. Using the ordinary-bet figure means overlaying and giving back part of the value.
How long do free bets last?
Usually days rather than weeks. An expired free bet is worth nothing, so the expiry date matters more than the face value and should be the first term you check.
What is the difference between a free bet and a bonus?
A free bet is placed as a bet. A bonus is credit with a wagering requirement — it must be staked a stated number of times before withdrawal, and a high multiple can make it worth less than the time involved.
Are free bets risk-free?
No. Covering both outcomes narrows variance rather than removing it. Markets move between bets, terms bind in ways people do not read, and accounts get restricted. Anyone claiming guaranteed profit is overselling it.
Do promotions differ between Ladbrokes and Coral?
They are the same licensed operator on the same licence number, so assume restrictions and limits travel between them. The same applies across the Paddy Power and Betfair entities.
